Who we are
Urban/Rural Rides looks to create partnerships with companies for extra ways to show our appreciation to our volunteers. Through our partnership with National Tire Distributors, Carl Killam was the fifth driver to win $1000 worth of tires donated by NTD. Carl has donated countless hours over the past few years to helping others access medical appointments and other life needs changing lives one ride at a time. He was very excited to receive his new studded top of the line winter tires so he can continue to help others safely this winter and beyond.

Become a Client
In order to use our service, you must first be registered as a client. Becoming a client is easy! Give us a call or download and fill out the Client registration form and return it to us via mail email. We will contact you as soon as possible. (Click the tab for your area)
How much does it cost?
Ride fees are based on the distance you travel. We charge a nominal fee for rides and also offer a subsidized rate (which is approximately 65% lower) for low income individuals and families. Call us for a quote and we will do our best to accommodate you.

Volunteer as a Driver
Our volunteer drivers are the heart and the backbone of our organization. Those who choose to become volunteer drivers with Urban/Rural Rides are offering much more than a drive – they are offering independence, security, and the ability to remain connected in their community.
If you’re interested in joining Urban/Rural Rides as a volunteer driver, we’d love to hear from you! Drivers must be 21 years old or older, possess a valid New Brunswick driver’s license, have an RCMP background check, possess a registered vehicle (or vehicles) that are clean and presentable with valid safety inspections, possess supplemental insurance that is reimbursed by Urban/Rural Rides (contact us for more details.)
We ask that our volunteers be available a minimum of 4 hours per month. However, none of our drivers are expected to devote long periods to this service or to disrupt their personal schedules. Drivers are community volunteers!

Community Information
Urban/Rural Rides provides transportation to seniors and low-income families for medical appointments. As the demand for service continues to grow in Southeast New Brunswick, the need to add more amazing volunteers to the team continues to be essential in supporting transportation requests. The goal is to make sure everyone who lacks transportation to appointments because they cannot drive, do not have a vehicle, and/or do not have family or neighbors who can assist them can find a friendly helping hand from a volunteer driver.
If you have a few hours a week to extend an act of kindness by driving someone to an appointment, please contact us. Volunteer drivers are reimbursed $.50/km as well as receive other community incentives.
Transportation is available Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To request a drive, please call us at 506-962-3073 or for more information or to volunteer.
National Volunteer Week recognition
Arlo Fisher was recognized as a Volunteer Driver with Urban Rural Rides from the Town of Riverview last evening – it was even more special as this was Riverview’s 50 Celebration Gala! Arlo you make us proud – keep up the great volunteer effort!
Symposium – Public and Community Transportation in NB
The Economic and Social Inclusion Corporation hosted a symposium on public and community transportation in NB on March 22 and 23, 2023 in Fredericton.

Urban Rural Rides is pleased to announce that our ‘Virtual Drop In Centre’ is now available to participants in Westmorland and Albert Counties. We started our pilot project in partnership with the residents at Caledonia Place in Hillsborough and have been having great conversations. We host our meetings once a month and our next zoom meeting is on Wednesday, February 22nd at 1:00 pm – {see virtual link below}. Our topic this month will be ‘Health and Well-being’ and we are pleased to have Sarah Lord, Ph. D. Health and Wellness Coordinator & Deidre Beckwith, BN, RN MN with Jean Coutu Pharmacy in Riverview. They will be sharing information about their services and can answer and questions about diabetes, the importance of movement and Covid vaccines. Hope you can drop by as this is a perfect time to connect with new friends especially in the rural community.

Mobilizing-Communities
Can you begin by describing the transportation/mobility inequity challenge you set out to address with your initiative?
The population of the area we cover in southeast New Brunswick is not dense. The organizations that eventually formed Urban/Rural Rides started as an initiative to help fill that gap primarily for the rural areas, because they don’t have any bus systems, the trains don’t stop in the rural areas, and they don’t have taxis. It leaves a vast portion of our population without transportation, so unless their neighbours drive them, or if a senior’s adult children take time off work to drive them, they are isolated. They’re cut off from services that they need.

With the cost of food dramatically increasing, we have created a space for our community to share easy and affordable recipes that will act as both an inspiration and resource to those who are working to make every penny of their grocery budget count. Ongoing Needs
“ Volunteer Drivers Urgently Needed for Dialysis Clients “
Volunteer Drivers are urgently needed to transport some of our clients for dialysis appointments. These clients living in the rural area have no other means of finding transportation and depend on our service. We are in urgent need of volunteer drivers from the following areas: Shediac {2 clients}, Murray Corner {1}, Cap Pele {1}, Petitcodiac {1}, Havelock {1}, Riverside Albert {1}. If you live in one of these areas and can give us a few hours a week to help us out in this urgent situation please contact our Ride Coordinator at 962-3073 or [email protected]. All volunteers drivers are reimbursed at 0.50/km from their home and return.
Changing Lives One Ride at A Time
One such story is a woman in Shediac who was diagnosed with terminal cancer and needed frequent transportation to the hospital for treatment. There is a shortage of volunteers in Shediac but, because of the seriousness of the need, a driver was brought in from another area to provide transportation to treatments.

Sometimes lack of transportation is not the only barrier to accessing services. One Wednesday in August, we received a letter in the mail from a senior lady living in a remote area with no phone or Internet, who needed a ride to the food bank. Our service requires 48 hours to book transportation and unfortunately the letter was received on the day she was asking for transportation.

The following Wednesday, a driver was out in that area for another ride and stopped in to check on this client and offer to take her to the food bank that afternoon. When the driver arrived at the home, the client did not answer the door but the driver could hear the radio on inside the house. The concern for the welfare of this client increased dramatically. After a conversation with the ride coordinator, it was decided to go ahead and do the other ride and then return to this client’s home to check on her again. If there was still no response, a call would be made for a wellness check. Thankfully, when the driver returned, the client answered the door. She had merely gone out for a walk. The driver took the client to the food bank to get supplies. We later received a letter of thanks from the food bank commending our driver and ride coordinator for going above and beyond to make sure this isolated senior had food.
“They Make Me Feel Like I Matter”
Michael has been using Urban/Rural Rides for several years now. He has been dealing with a multitude of medical needs and relies on Urban/Rural Rides for his transportation into the city for his appointments.
“They are always kind when I interact with them – the drivers and the staff. They listen and are very helpful. The drivers are volunteers. They give up their time to make sure I get to my appointments. That makes me feel like I matter because someone is willing to give up their own time to help me.” said Michael
“The benefit of this service goes well beyond the ride itself. I have a lot of health issues and I am in constant pain. However, when I am in the car having a friendly conversation with a driver, I am distracted in a way. I feel better. My pain is lower for a time because I am interacting with someone.” said Michael.
Michael is one of the many lives being changed one ride at a time. In addition to assisting people to get to their appointments, a friendly conversation, interaction with someone and knowing that they matter enough for someone to take the time to help them goes a long way to improving the lives of those without transportation who may be isolated from people and services.

It is amazing how much we achieved even in these challenging times. True team spirit and positivity has moved us forward. We have served our clients well, we overcame obstacles and have proven.
URBAN RURAL RIDES/TRANSPORT URBAIN RURAL is a service organization like no other.
Our volunteers are the very best!
Our board of directors have invested their energy and optimism to lead our vision into reality – we now operate successfully under one new name with one goal, which is service delivery to clients in need. Perhaps there are a few unfinished items – such as our ‘Official Launch’ – for media and government however we have shown that even without the additioal promotion our commitment has proven and shown – we are here and New Brunswicker knows it!
